Like most colleges and universities, the BC campus has grown and evolved steadily over a long period of time. The development patterns that make BC such a special place are the same land use patterns that today have resulted in the creation of a very challenging stormwater management and flood control environment. Located at the intersection of several historic Boston neighborhoods, many of the college’s flood control issues are caused by dense development patterns around the campus completed more than 100 years ago that neglected to plan adequately for the engineering impacts of those growth directions.
Waterfield Design was retained by Boston College to provide an in-depth and
comprehensive review of all stormwater management issues. Using state-of-the-art interactive stormwater modeling techniques and extensive on-site research and survey,we created intricate stormwater modeling and identified the multi-layered constraints
that were causing significant flood damage to many of the college’s most critical facilities located on Lower Campus. These facilities include: Alumni Stadium, a 65,000 seat NCAA Division I football arena; the Flynn Athletic Complex (indoor track, basketball, tennis, racquetball, swimming, diving, fitness, etc.), The Mods (student housing); and Conte Forum, the school’s NCAA Division I hockey arena. Our efforts also required extensive interaction with the Boston Water & Sewer Commission, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, and the Cities of Boston and Newton.
Our stormwater analysis efforts required that we provide Infrastructure Master Planning for Boston College, our company’s signature marriage of civil engineering and facility
planning. Our efforts were critical to help BC reconcile and influence the staging, shape,
and engineering focus of several upcoming multi-million dollar capital improvement
projects. Waterfield Design worked closely with BC’s nationally ranked Master Plan consultants, helping them define the shape and outcome of the next 100 years at BC.
